When stress shows up in more than just behaviour
A new home is a huge change. And sometimes you can see its effects not only in the way your new four-legged roommate behaves, but also in how their body responds.
In the previous episode of “New Four-Legged Roommate”, we talked about adjustment stress - and why time, calm and personal space matter so much during the first days after adoption.
This time, we take the conversation one step further.
Together with Jola Jurkiewicz-Azab, we look at what can happen when an animal’s body is coping with such a major life change. Can stress affect the immune system? Why might infections or other health issues suddenly appear? And most importantly - what should we pay attention to without immediately assuming the worst?
Because after adoption, it’s worth noticing not only what your pet does, but also how they feel.

"A New Four-Legged Roommate - Adopting a Dog or Cat with a Head and a Heart" is a conversation series created as part of the Pet Care on the Go project.
Honest, thoughtful, and full of care, we talk about pet adoption without sugarcoating, but with great respect and heart. We discuss decisions, emotions, responsibility, and the relationship that begins long before the day a dog or cat crosses the threshold of your home.
Joining us in our conversations is Jolanta Jurkiewicz-Azab, a theriologist and long-time animal advocate who has worked closely with rescue organizations and adoption processes for years. She is the creator of the Jelenie w Terenie Facebook page, a camera-trap enthusiast, and an expert guest on Klinika Zdrowego Chomika on Radio Kraków. If anyone has seen the many realities of adoption behind the scenes, it’s her.
