Our #PetCareOnTheGo first aid kit is now in Vilnius! How does Lithuania fight animal homelessness?

Did you know that as many as 35% of dogs and cats in 20 countries surveyed do not have their own home?

These alarming figures come from The State of Pet Homelessness Project, conducted in May 2024 in cooperation with Mars. They show how big a challenge animal homelessness is around the world.

In Poland, the situation is slightly better, but we still have a problem. Homelessness affects about 8% of pets, which means that as many as 950,000 dogs and cats still do not have a permanent home. This is a huge number and a challenge that we must face.

How does the #PetCareOnTheGo project works?

In our Pet Care on The Go project, we try to systematically improve animal welfare, both locally in Małopolska and ultimately throughout the country. An important element of our activities is drawing inspiration from other countries that effectively combat the problem of animal homelessness.

Our  #PetCareOnTheGo first aid kit at the "LESĖ" shelter in Vilnius!

Recently we had the opportunity to visit the "LESĖ" w Wilnie. It was there that we delivered one of our #PetCareOnTheGo first aid kits, supporting the daily work of volunteers and animal carers.

It is a great honor for us that our initiative crosses borders and supports activities for animals also outside Poland.

How Lithuania is fighting animal homelessness? Inspirations from Vilnius

Lithuania is struggling with the homelessness of 18.5 thousand animals, which is 5% of the entire pet population. What steps are they taking to reduce this problem?

  • Universal sterilization and marking - the Vilnius authorities actively support these activities, especially in rural areas. This reduces uncontrolled animal breeding and makes it easier to find lost pets.

  • "Senior for Senior" program - elderly residents of Vilnius can become caregivers for animals that have lost their owners. The city provides full support, including food, beds and veterinary care. This is a great example of how you can combine caring for animals with helping the elderly.

  • Expanded shelters with education in the background - the "LESĖ" shelter was renovated in 2024 and now offers not only better conditions for animals, but also expanded veterinary services and educational programs. Young people have the opportunity to learn more about responsible animal care, which is key to preventing homelessness.

  • Coalition of organizations and authorities – activities in Vilnius are supported by both non-governmental organizations and local authorities and government institutions. This is a great example of how cooperation at different levels can lead to real changes.

Let's implement good practices in Poland

Lithuania inspires us to further action! As part of the #PetCareOnTheGo project, we want to implement proven solutions in Poland as well. We believe that through education, cooperation and programs like ours, we can have a real impact on improving the fate of animals.

Be with us, support our initiatives and help build a better future for our four-legged friends.

Join us and together let's change the world for animals for the better!
