The dog who travels by rails - premium edition

How is comfort and safety for animals on trains becoming a top priority?

Summer is in full swing. More and more people are choosing to travel by train with their pets – whether heading off on vacation, visiting family, or enjoying a weekend getaway. This growing trend is transforming the way we think about the travel experience – not only from the passenger’s point of view, but also through the eyes (and wagging tail) of their four-legged companion.

Travelling with a pet isn’t just about comfort – it’s first and foremost about safety. This is especially true for people who rely on assistance dogs, for whom access to the right resources in an emergency can be critical.

That’s why the pilot project run by PKP Intercity, in cooperation with Atelier Wartości – a social enterprise from the Małopolska region – under the initiative #PetCareOnTheGo, is a genuine game-changer in Polish rail travel – and perhaps globally.

Pendolino trains are now equipped with dedicated “Pet Care on the Go” first-aid kits for dogs and cats. Developed by Atelier Wartości, these kits are designed with the safety of animal companions in mind, containing disinfectants, dressings, and tick removers, among other essentials.

Crucially, each kit also includes instructions in Braille – a feature that sets the project apart and underscores its commitment to accessibility, particularly for travellers with disabilities accompanied by assistance dogs. Instructiom was prepared with helped of Zespół Szkół i Placówek pn. „Centrum dla Niewidomych i Słabowidzących” in Krakow.

- With summer in full swing, we’re keeping the spotlight on animal safety in travel - says Beatrycze Bem, co-founder of Atelier Wartości. - After the success of our yellow first-aid kits for motorists, available at selected petrol stations, the natural next step was to provide amenities for those using public transport. PKP Intercity was our first choice – as an industry leader and a partner open to social innovation.

PKP Intercity is proving itself an innovator among rail operators. Partnering with social enterprises like Atelier Wartości demonstrates how modern solutions can go hand in hand with corporate social responsibility.

- We want every passenger – whether travelling alone, with family, or with a pet – to feel safe and comfortable. The ‘Pet Care on the Go’ kits are a simple yet genuinely needed step towards a more pet-friendly railway. - says Maciej Dutkiewicz, PKP Intercity spokesperson - We’re proud to be the first carrier in Poland to introduce such innovations, staying in tune with global trends while setting new standards for social engagement.

Summer is travel season – and with the growing popularity of taking pets along for the ride, initiatives like #PetCareOnTheGo are a natural response to market demand and passenger expectations.

The first-aid kits will be available from Pendolino onboard staff, ensuring quick and easy access to essential supplies in case of emergencies.
